China the largest importer of Congo Basin timber

China has become the largest importer of timber from the Congo Basin with some 2.9 million cubic metres (RWE) bought in 2014. This amounts to over 75% of total timber exports from the Congo Basin and exceeds the two million cubic metres imported by member states of the EU.

In 2014 China imported 95% of all logs produced in Equatorial Guinea, 85% in Congo Brazzaville, 78% in the Central African Republic, 76% in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 64% in Gabon and 63% in Cameroon.
